Other major ethnic groups include the Somali (6.2%), Tigray (6.1%), Sidama (4%), Gurage (2.5%), Welayta (2.3%), Afar (1.7%), Hadiya (1.7%), and Gamo (1.5%).

A caravan of camels on their way through the Ass Ale salt lake in the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia. Every day more than 1000 camels are arriving at the place where the Afar people are braking plates of salt out of the ground – the traders are buying these salt-blocks and transporting themt with their caravans of camels and donkeys in 5 – 6 days back to the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia. The Danakil Desert (or Danakil Depression) in the border-triangle between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti is one of the most remote and most extreme regions of the world – it is the lowest point in Africa (- 155 metres/-550 ft below sea level) and one of the hottest places on Earth.
