Birthplace of the Hamburger: The Library of Congress recognizes Louis’ Lunch in New Haven as the birthplace of the hamburger. In 1900, the owner placed a grilled ground beef patty between two slices of bread for a rushed customer.
The First Speed Limit: In 1901, Connecticut became the first U.S. state to enact a speed limit law. The maximum speed was set to a brisk 12 miles per hour on roads shared by fewer than 6,000 cars nationwide.
Home of the First Nuclear Submarine: The world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was constructed in Groton in 1954
