The Easternmost Point: Due to the curvature of the Earth, Maine’s Quoddy Head is closer to the coast of Africa than it is to Florida. Donut Holes Were Invented Here: A sea captain from Rockport, Maine is credited with punching a hole in the center of dough before frying it in 1847 to solve the issue of undercooked dough centers. There’s a 40-Acre Desert: Outside the town of Freeport, you can find a natural phenomenon known as the Desert of Maine. It features sweeping sand dunes surrounded entirely by lush pine forests.
