The Weird Official State Sport: In 1962, Maryland became the first state in the U.S. to designate an official state sport: jousting. It has roots in the region’s equestrian culture and is still practiced in competitive tournaments today.
The “Ouija” Board was Invented There: The iconic, mystical talking board was developed in Baltimore in 1890. The patent was granted to businessman Elijah Bond, and he is buried in the city’s Green Mount Cemetery.
Annapolis Was Once the Nation’s Capital: From November 1783 to August 1784, the Maryland State House in Annapolis served as the seat of the United States government. It is also the nation’s oldest state house in continuous use, having been built in 1779.
